Pat Sanders to lead the UDUUF in a Flower Communion on April 26th
NARROWSBURG - Pat Sanders will lead the Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in a Flower Communion, which is a uniquely Unitarian Universalist ritual that celebrates beauty, diversity, and shared community.
Each person is asked to bring a flower to a service. These are placed together in a common vase or display. Later in the service, each participant takes a different flower home. The symbolism is simple but powerful. Every flower is unique, like every person. Together they create something more beautiful than any single flower. When you leave, you carry a piece of the community with you.
The ritual was created in 1923 by Norbert Čapek. At the time, he wanted a ceremony that:
- Was inclusive and not tied to traditional Christian sacraments
- Could be shared by people of different beliefs
- Emphasized human connection rather than doctrine
After Čapek was later killed during World War II, the ritual spread internationally and became a cherished UU tradition.
In Unitarian Universalism, there is no required creed. The Flower Communion expresses core UU values without words:
- Radical inclusion
- Interdependence
- Respect for individual differences
If you’ve ever attended one, you may have noticed how quietly moving it can be. Even without formal theology, it tends to land emotionally -- especially in smaller fellowships like Upper Delaware Unitarian Universalist Fellowship.

Liz has been involved in teaching and community education for over 20 years. Her commitment is always first and foremost to serve the needs of the individuals in her classes and workshops, whatever the topics or subject matter. In Yoga, she finds a comprehensive path of personal discovery – a process of deepening your connection to the people you love, your joy in the world you live in, and developing a more conscious and loving relationship with yourself.
Liz described her planned remarks at the UDUUF: "As the branches of a large and spreading tree grow from and depend on a common trunk and shared roots for vitality and support, so it is with the living traditions of yoga. I began my formal study of yoga at age 60. As a 21st-century practitioner, I have alighted somewhere in the complex crown of that tree, experiencing and sampling the individualized embodiments of yoga from this teacher, that school, the translations of guru X, the commentaries of scholar Y. As both a teacher and a student, my understanding and practice of yoga continue to unfold as a means of approaching a more intimate and active relationship with what is sacred and moral, and with what it means to be fully human.
